Recently, China Engineering & Consulting Association released the results of “2019 Outstanding Engineering and Design Award of Engineering, Architecture Design and Municipal Public Engineering”. Yunding Road Bicycle Expressway Demonstration Project and West Xiang’an Road (South Xiang’an Road to East Xiang’an Road) Project won the second prizes as outstanding municipal engineering public project design. In the awarding activity held by Fujian Engineering & Consulting Association previously, 6 projects undertaken by Xiamen Municipal Engineering Design Division Co., Ltd won the provincial first, second, and third prizes respectively for the Outstanding Engineering and Design Award.
Outstanding Engineering and Design Award of Engineering, Architecture Design and Municipal Public Engineering is held once every two year. Covering outstanding architecture engineering designs, architecture structure projects, municipal engineering designs, landscape architecture projects and other sectors, this Award enjoys relatively high quality in engineering and design industry.

Yunding Road Bicycle Expressway Demonstration Project

This project is the first bicycle expressway of bicycle overpass in China, also the longest one in the whole world. It starts at Hongwen BRT station and ends at Xianhou BRT Station in Xiamen, with the total length of 7.6 kilometers. This project puts the independent bicycle overpass under the current BRT bridges to utilize the multi-layered space. There are 11 entrances and exits for the expressway and they are linked directly to BRT stations, metro stations and bus stops, which facilitates transfer for riders.

Bicycle expressway gives the utmost priority to bicycle commuters and offers them safe, fast and comfortable riding routes. This project is a practice of innovation. Without any similar projects in China, this project launches a series of researches on function positioning, technological standards, road network and routes selection, form of expressway, crossing and intersection, and entrances and exits. And the research results are implemented in the project then, providing precious practical experience for the replication and application of bicycle expressway in China. This project has independently researched and developed a number of invention patents. It has also won the China Human Settlement and Environment Demonstration Awards which is organized by Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development in 2017.
West Xiang’an Road (South Xiang’an Road to East Xiang’an Road) Project

West Xiang’an Road lies in the center of south Xiang’an new city, which is a key new development area of Xiamen City. As a comprehensive main road in urban area, it shoulders the functions of transportation and life service. It’s also an important municipal engineering pipe route. This project is a main road of the city. It is 60 meters wide between boundary lines on both sides and is 7,176 meters long. It is a two-way road with 10 driveways. The design speed is 60km/h.

This project adopts the traffic organization method of “road without barriers” and achieve the double transportation functions of regional high-speed traffic and service to local areas. Using the concept of “sponge city”, the project follows an ecological and natural engineering design. It deploys an integral pipe line which would enhance the security of critical pipes. The project avoids the repeated digging of roads and utilizes underground spaces intensively. Additionally, precast assembly technique is also used in the project. As the demonstration project of “integral pipe line” and “sponge city” selected by Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, this project is a high-quality urban main road that comprehensively applies innovative concepts and technological techniques. Future similar projects may draw meaningful lessons from its design concept and practical experience.
